Managing your credit card account is something clearly within your control - but what about fraud? There are some steps all cardholders can take to help avoid their card or card details falling into the wrong hands:

1. When you get a new card, sign it immediately - even if you won't be using it for some time.

2. Memorise your PIN, never write it down or keep it with your cards.

3. Never leave your purse or wallet on view in the car, or unattended when at work or leisure.

4. Never sign a voucher without first checking that the amount is correct, and make sure you get your card back after your transaction.

5. If a mistake is made when making a purchase, make sure all copies of the voucher are destroyed and the transaction is cancelled before signing a second voucher.

6. Never give your credit card number, PIN or expiry date to anyone who phones you unexpectedly.

7. Always check the transactions on your statement as soon as you receive it.

If you do not recognise any transaction, contact the card provider immediately.

8. Always read the terms and conditions when purchasing goods or services on the internet.
