THE Government's new 9 per cent Stamp Duty is penal, the Law Society said last night. The society challenged the Minister for Finance, Mr Quinn's assertion that the purpose of the tax was to dampen the property market, suggesting that if this were the case, it could be introduced for a limited period. "At the very least, the threshold of £150,000 should be indexed against property inflation each year," a spokesman said.
