Technology issues led the stock market further into record territory yesterday with Nasdaq shares setting a new high for a third straight day.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose just 23.43 to 11,209.84, topping Monday's record close of 11,200.98 and extending this year's gain to 22 per cent. For the week, however, the Dow only mustered a gain of 16.14.

The broad market finished the day mixed, with declining issues outnumbering advancers overall.

According to preliminary calculations, the S&P 500 rose 7.35 to 1,416.97. The Nasdaq composite rose 25.13 to 2,864.50.

The number of winners and losers on the New York Stock Exchange was virtually even, with 1,478 up, 1,476 down and 603 unchanged. Nasdaq decliners led advancers by a narrow margin, 1,999 to 1,888.

NYSE volume totalled 710.05 million shares as of 4 p.m., down from 796.79 million at the same point on Thursday.
