Sony reveals Z2 smartphone, tablet at mobile event

‘Bigger, better and bolder’ 2014 promised for Japanese tech giant as it goes big on mobile

Sony’s latest Z2 tablet and smartphone were unveiled at Mobile World Congress today.

Sony unveiled a new flagship smartphone and tablet as it promised the company's mobile unit would be bigger, better and bolder in 2014.

The company revealed its new Xperia Z2 as expected, alongside a new version of its Android tablet that claims to be the thinnest 10-inch device on the market.

The company is bringing some of the technology and innovation its has developed for its audio and video business to its phone, building in the ability capture video in 4K resolution and offering noise cancelling headphones for the Z2 handset.

The new Z2 phone will retain many of the features of its predecessor, the Z1, such as the 20.7 megapixel camera and its waterproof casing. But the display has been bumped up to 5.2 inches and the proessor speed has been increased slightly to 2.3GHz.

Sony also announced a mid-tier phone, the Xperia M2. The LTE phone comes with a 4.8 inch display and a quad core 1.2GHz processor.

The company is fighting to gain market share in a smartphone sector that is dominated by Samsung and Apple, and is becoming increasingly saturated with high-ends devices.

Earlier this year, Sony announced it was developing a smart tracker and accompanying Lifelog app that would not only track motion and sleep, but also “emotion”, logging photos and music throughout the day. At Mobile World Congress, the company gave a closer look at what to expect from the app, and said the tracker would go on sale next month.
