Ever since the introduction of iOS 8 the notification centre widget has been largely overlooked by most big name apps. It’s a great way to catch up on news headlines or upcoming events in your calendar but little else.

Some clever developers have circumvented this by creating their own widgets. Akhil Tolani has created NC, a 99 cents app that pulls in and displays a "widgetised" set of latest timeline tweets or mentions. There's also Arno Appenzeller's Glimpse, which takes whole web pages and funnels them into your list of widgets. A good example is Wikipedia's "Featured Article"; use your notification centre to learn something new each day.
