A demonstration of Microsoft's new Surface computer shows how a 30-inch display under a hard-plastic tabletop can be used to interact with a computer.

Microsoft says it is the first step in developing a multitouch computing system that could ultimately spell an end to using a keyboard and mouse to interact with PCs. Users simply touch the surface of the screen to directly manipulate objects on screen. It also recognises devices placed on its surface like a mobile phone, music player or digital camera, which can relay information to the computer.

In the example pictured two users are collaborating to organise a digital music collection.

The $10,000 (€7,452) table will be available later this year.
