UTV is proposing to spend €2.9 million on marketing a new radio station for Belfast, the company said yesterday.

The company, which already owns stations such as Dublin's Q102 and Limerick's Live 95 FM in the Republic, is facing stiff competition from nine high-profile consortiums for a new Belfast radio licence. If successful, UTV's station will be called U105.

Companies active in the Republic, such as Independent News & Media and CanWest (part-owners of TV3), are also pursuing the licence.

Yesterday was the deadline for applications for the licence. The selection of the winners will be done by the British regulator Ofcom.
