Win two tickets to the Irish premiere of Drone Mass and a stay at the Pembroke Hotel, Kilkenny.

Kilkenny Arts Festival is giving one lucky Irish Times reader two tickets to the Irish premiere performance of Jóhann Jóhannsson’s defining masterpiece Drone Mass and an overnight stay with breakfast at the four-star Pembroke Hotel.

Take in a night of breathless performance at Ireland’s longest running multi-disciplinary arts festival. Witness the Irish debut of the late Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson’s crowning achievement, Drone Mass, presented with Chamber Choir Ireland and Crash Ensemble, in the iconic St. Canice’s Cathedral. After the evening’s events, retreat to the fabulous four-star Pembroke Hotel in the heart of Kilkenny and savour a delicious breakfast at the famous Staham’s restaurant the next morning.

The late Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson was a singular talent, as celebrated for his theatre and film scores (including Arrival and Sicario) as for his orchestral work, and Drone Mass is his defining work. Despite the name, Drone Mass isn’t really a mass. It’s a mysterious and richly textured work inspired by an ancient Egyptian Coptic hymn. Weaving voices, strings and electronics into a mesmerising soundscape that bears comparison with the work of minimalist greats like Arvo Pärt and Henryk Górecki, Drone Mass is the thrilling debut Irish performance of a great composer’s masterpiece.
