Good in a Crisis
Margaret Overton
Bloomsbury, £7.99
I finished this book wishing I could ring Margaret Overton and beg her to be my friend. She’d be ideal-funny, knocked about by life and (crucial, this) never pretending to be perfect. She even lives in Chicago, a city I love. Surely it’s meant to be?
Overton is a doctor who wrote this memoir after surviving several years that hurled her through upheaval, catastrophe and loss. She got divorced, and the row over property was so nasty the case went to trial. A brain aneurysm nearly killed her. Dating brought various oddballs into her life, including one who raped her. Her mother developed dementia. Her daughter was hideously injured in an accident. A good pal died.
Amazingly, she’s not only sane but still has her sense of humour.
Believe me when I tell you this book, while thoughtful, is no downer.
Buy it. It’ll make you laugh. Honest.
