• Brownies were originally known as Rosebuds when they were founded by British army general Robert Baden-Powell in 1910, and placed in the care of his sister, Agnes.

• Brown Owls and Brownies got their name from a story by Julia Horatio Ewing, which Baden-Powell fondly remembered from his childhood, about "happy little people who helped others".

• Brownie and Brigin badges include those for computer skills, circus performing and disability awareness - as well as the more traditional "hostess" and "first aid" badges.
