SAVATH & SAVALAS
Mañana Warp
***
A wee slip of an album in every sense, Mañana uses the patterns set by Prefuse 73's Guillermo Scott Heron and Catalan singer-songwriter Eva Puyelo Muns on their previous collaboration, the enchanting Apropa't, to craft the most beguiling of tunes. Recorded in Barcelona, Mañana, with its eight beautifully streamlined and perfectly sculpted slivers of simple electronic folk, does appear deceptively slender. While it may seem that the merest push would cause Dema Vinura or Sense Pressa to collapse or capsize, these tunes were built to withstand all sorts of pressure and experimentation. As with Apropa't, it's classic Brazilian songwriting which sets many directions, with hints of Tom Ze and Caetano Veloso to be found guiding the strings, piano and subtly treated electronics that haunt Soto l'aigua and especially the opening Interludio Inconcreto. www.warprecords.com
