Twitter could not cope with Ellen DeGeneres’s A-lister packed selfie that broke retweeting records and disrupted the social media.

The photograph from Oscars host DeGeneres atracted more than 2.3 million retweets.

The selfie to end all selfies was taken by Bradley Cooper and included Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Meryl Streep, Kevin Spacey, Julia Roberts, Jared Leto, Channing Tatum and Lupita Nyong'o.

Nyong’o’s brother Peter also took advantage to jump into the photograph.

The chatshow host took out her phone and beckoned to the front row stars to join her.

DeGeneres later said at the ceremony the picture had crashed Twitter.

“We really just made history. We’re all winners tonight,” she said.

The Tweet broke the record set by US president Barack Obama with the photograph of him hugging the First Lady Michelle Obama after his re-election in 2012.

Twitter sent out an apology for a disrupted service for more than 20 minutes due to the level of retweeting.

Actor Benedict Cumberbatch is definitely in the running to win the unofficial best photobomb award after he photobombed U2 while they were posing for pictures on the red carpet at the 86th Academy Awards.

Twitters latest figures revealed American Hustle actor Jennifer Lawrence waas the most tweeted about star during the live show.
