An interesting controversy has bubbled up concerning Black Swan.

Sarah Lane, a soloist for American Ballet Theatre, has complained that, contrary to reports in the publicity material, 95 per cent of those dance sequences involving “full body shots” were performed by her rather than Natalie Portman.

Lane argues that she was the victim of a cover-up engineered to increase Portman’s Oscar chances. The story had, indeed, been put about that the actor had learned to dance to near-professional standard in a few short months.

Both director Darren Aronofsky and co-star Mila Kunis have contradicted Lane’s claims. “Here is the reality,” Aronofsky said. “I had my editor count shots. There are 139 dance shots in the film; 111 are Natalie Portman untouched; 28 are her dance double Sarah Lane. If you do the math, that’s 80 per cent Natalie Portman.”

Lane had also claimed that Portman never quite managed to dance in pointe shoes. “To be clear, Natalie did dance on pointe in pointe shoes,” Aronofsky added. “If you look at the final shot of the opening prologue, which lasts 85 seconds, and was danced completely by Natalie, she exits the scene on pointe. That is completely her without any digital magic.”

Kunis was similarly outraged on Portman’s behalf: “Natalie danced her ass off.”
