Performers tend to shine on the Fringe, but the Read Company has gone one step further and ditched the writer altogether. Taking hints on characterisation from the audience - on Monday night the protagonist had to be a hunchback with a fear of the colour yellow, who also studied martial arts - eight actor/comedians improvise a series of short comic scenes, taking the plot in increasingly wacky directions ("yellow killed my Mammy!"). These talented performers : Michelle Read, Brendan Dempsey, Ned Dennehy, Tara Flynn, PJ Gallagher, Natalie Stringer, Kevin Gildea and Paul Tylack, are clearly having a ball. Even so, 50 minutes of their absurd antics prompted wistful thoughts of that theatrical convention, the script.
