The Irish establishment is not renowned for its imagination or sense of style, inclining as a rule towards dull conformity. For this reason alone, Valerie Morris - wife of the President of the High Court, Mr Justice Frederick Morris - would merit attention because she adopts a distinctive and refreshingly original approach to fashion. There can be few women of her generation who wear Alexander McQueen, for example, since most of them prefer to dress in a more conventional and safe manner.
Morris, however, is unafraid to try new names thanks to a justifiable confidence in her own taste. Other labels she can be found wearing include Amanda Wakeley (for both day and evening), Catherine Walker, Jasper Conran and, from this country, Louise Kennedy.
All these designers share certain characteristics appreciated by Morris. They tend to use the lightweight, extremely fine fabrics she prefers to wear and they all understand the importance of good cut. Valerie Morris would never be seen in anything ill-fitting; an impeccably tailored silhouette is important to her and, as a result, she always seems immaculate, as though she had just stepped into her clothes for the very first time. Textured fibres tend to be avoided, together with prints, but she is adventurous with colour, choosing anything from classic navy to the brightest shade of green. Her jewellery can be just as bold, but she would never overload herself with too many pieces.
The term "petite" might have been coined to describe Valerie Morris, as her figure, like her clothing, is kept in perfect condition. She is certainly no slacker and makes the effort to look her best at all times and in all circumstances. The result: a woman of enormous elegance who demonstrates that this quality ought not to be taken for granted.
