There are plenty of buildings out there built with music in mind, from China's tacktastic piano and violin house to Frank Gehry's Dancing House in Prague.
But now pop's most potent powerhouse is getting her own office building, after Melbourne company Elenberg Fraser announced it has won planning approval for a skyscraper inspired by Bey busting moves.
The new Premiere Tower turned to Beyoncé's video for the song Ghost for inspiration (which was sadly lacking when it came to naming the block). In the video, dancers struggle to unsheathe themselves from some tricky looking tubes of material (don't worry if you don't remember it; it's not exactly at Maddie Ziegler in Chandelier's level of choreography).
The resulting curves and shapes apparently sent the architects scrambling for their drawing boards, and gave the company a great way to PR pimp their wares around the world (this article included – damn, those designers are seductively sneaky). Those expecting a 43-storey likeness of Houston’s most famous daughter will be disappointed though: this being an office block, it looks a lot like a slightly curvy office block.
The Ticket for one, though, is appalled by this pure piracy of Beyoncé's image – there is no indication that she was consulted on this flagrant misappropriation of her likeness.
How are musicians to earn a crust if people just randomly throw up buildings that look like them? Perhaps Tidal needs to set up an architectural division so that pop stars can finally get the structures they deserve.
We look forward to a more stable and secure future for all of our architectonic artists. Let the litigation begin.
