While many post-rock acts kick against the constraints and tropes of the genre, Russian Circles continue to tighten the musical knot, embracing the limitations that guitar, bass and drums grant. Fourth album Empros (2011) marked a turning point for the Chicagoans as they finally gelled a track-list into a cohesive, satisfying whole.
Two releases on, they've done it again. With its expertly managed mood and pace, Guidance quite simply flows. Notably democratic in their approach, the trio ably showcase their considerable chops. Tender opener Asa is a moment of calm before the gut-pummelling controlled explosions of Vorel and Mota send debris in every direction. Afrika gorgeously balances the aggressive push of Mogwai with the emotional pull of This Will Destroy You.
Groundbreaking? No, but impressively earth-shattering.
