Amazing Kind of Blue****

In its deceptively easygoing way, Amazingfully merits the name. It's like a sophisticated chat between three masters who have nothing to prove and savour what each has to contribute. Liebman, here on soprano, tenor, C flute and, briefly, wooden Indian flute,has an infallible capacity to reconcile surprise with logic. Swallow constructs bass lines that are simultaneously personal, reactive and leading. Nussbaum is a marvellously musical drummer adept at putting in the punctuation where it matters. Despite their strong personalities, the trio has an internal balance and secure dynamic. The programme is mainly their originals (with two lovely free performances) but they bring a persuasively noirish latin feel to Cole Porter's Get Out of Town. Standouts include a bittersweet Remember, Amazing, a vivacious My Maiaand a delightful, quirky Bend Over Backwards. See kindofblue records.com
