Hurry Up, We're Dreaming Naïve***
There are many big gestures on Anthony Gonzalez's sixth album as M83, and none more so than the fact that it's a double. The French producer demonstrated his prowess with large-scale palettes on previous albums, but here, on an album influenced by road trips around California and spells in the Joshua Tree national park, Gonzalez doesn't hold back. It's a full-bodied and widescreen affair, the producer working his magic with familiar shades of dream-pop, melancholic synth symphonies and hazy ambient swathes of sound. The only problem is the material often sounds a mite thin for the visions and ambitions Gonzalez is projecting. For every magnificent, colourful, sonically euphoric track such as Midnight Cityor the sweetly refined Soon, My Friend, there's a handful of lesser lights to contend with. While impressive in size and stature, it throws a lightweight punch. See ilovem83.com
