Kaleidoscope DreamRCA ****
Miguel Pimentel’s second album begins with Adorn, and you’re hooked from the start like a big ol’ fish on a line. Tipping the hat to Marvin Gaye’s Sexual Healing, Adorn swings and sizzles. But there’s more where that comes from, and those who caught Pimentel’s Art Dealer Chic EPs from earlier this year will have clicked that the singer has moved to mine deeper seams. Kaleidoscope Dream is rich, substantial, adventurous and colourful, the work of an artist prepared to take chances by not doing what’s expected of him.
The blasts of purple psychedelia (a strong Purple Rain buzz to Do You and the title track), disco shimmies (What's the Fun in Forever) and loverman bragging (Pussy Is Mine) reinforce the message that this is an artist redefining what he's all about.
