PUSHA-T ft TYLER, THE CREATOR
Trouble On My Mind G.O.O.D. Music/Re-Up Gang *****
There's a wonderful moment in Jason Goldwatch's video that captures the dynamic here: Pusha and Tyler are stopped at traffic lights when two female extras begin making out on the kerb. Pusha purses his lips and nods his head appreciatively, as though this might happen at any intersection. But Tyler turns to the camera and flashes a goofy, disbelieving grin, as if to say "Oh. My. God! Did you guys see that?" Produced by the Neptunes, this is an epic taster from the forthcoming Fear of God II: Let Us Pray.
CIAN NUGENT
Sixes& Sevens VHF Records ****
The acclaimed debut album by 22-year-old Dublin guitarist Cian Nugent, Doublesis a 45-minute masterpiece made up of two instrumental tracks: Peaks Troughsand the longer Sixes & Sevens. But if the internet has really sapped your attention span that badly, director Dylan Phillips has chopped this down to a more manageable three minutes. Philistines! Philistines!
THE PAINS OF BEING PURE AT HEART
The Body Play It Again Sam ***
“Tell me again what the body is for,” sings Kip Berman. “Cos I cannot feel it anymore.” The music zips with the effervescence of a Technique-era New Order single, though poor old Kip sounds down in the dumps. But what of quality of life was he expecting with a name like Kip? Couldn’t he gone with something a little more cheerful, like Bedsit?
