Sheffield producer Tom Bell's 2009 debut album, Skanky Skanky, charmed many with its irresistible blur of sprightly, bouncy, Day-Glo urban party music. What's striking about this new one is the glistening pop sheen to Bell's sonic brew, which is as much about tastes catching up with the producer's vision as any attempt to take mainstream steps. When Bell gets his ducks in a row, the results are quite spectacular, with the title track (Roots Manuva kicking out the verbal jams), Take it Back(old-school house moves with vocals from Shola Ama) and Badman Flu(a carnivalesque, frisky riot) providing oodles of reasons to be cheerful. Watch Me Dancewas partially recorded in Kingston, though there's little zip or zing to the JA-influenced tracks. A game of two halves then, with one definitely worth the price of admission.
