Our Lives Are Shaped By What We Love: Motown's Mowest Story 1971-1973 Light in the Attic****
After Motown supremo Berry Gordy moved operations from Detroit to LA, he hatched a new label to capture the sounds of the west coast. The short-lived Mowest imprint, though a commercial flop, was home to a terrific treasure trove of music. Away from the white heat of Detroit's soul motor, Mowest curated sounds and artists who crossed all the tracks. From future northern soul anthem The Night(Frankie Valli The Four Seasons) to the delirious disco pizzazz of The Sisters Love's Give Me Your Love, Mowest developed and mastered a superbly liquid, warm, funky groove. None of its new finds ever got the cash- registers ringing in the same way as Marvin or Smokey or Stevie, but this fantastic compilation puts the subsidiary's legacy back in the frame.
