Standing apart from the many acts emanating from LA, Will Wiesenfeld – aka Baths – has wasted little time in moving from DIY bedroom musician to full-fledged recording artist. This darker, less playful release than his debut places Baths somewhere between Flying Lotus and Perfume Genius, with the skilful, skittish production nous of the former coupled with the primal and candid lyrical content of the latter. Songs that began life as simpler piano and voice arrangements are reconfigured into chasm-filling electronic pop, exemplified by the dreamy, crushed beats of Ironworks and the pulsating Ossuary . There's an argument to be made that less could sometimes achieve more, but beyond the deep palette of sounds and Wiesenfeld's instantly gratifying falsetto, Baths should be singled out as a young talent worth watching.
