Norma is the supreme opera of the bel canto period, and Cecilia Bartoli's assumption of the part has been eagerly awaited. It comes in a new critical edition on period instruments, restoring the composer's original dynamic tempo and tonal markings. It has caused some controversy, with lovers of pure bel canto rejoicing in the return to early 19th century practice, while those who know the role through the Maria Callas recordings may bemoan the loss of dramatic intensity. However, Bartoli sings the role with wonderful clarity of tone, assisted by the lean sound of the period orchestra. Sumi Jo as the lighter voiced Adalgisa is convincing, and John Osborn is an adequate Pollione. This is a five-star alt.interpretation of one of the great 19th-century operas.
