The last of the BBC’s August series of free invitation concerts sees Dublin soprano Orla Boylan teaming up with the Ulster Orchestra under Jurjen Hempel on Friday for an Ulster Hall performance of Wagner’s Wesendonck Lieder. The concert opens with Webern’s Variations, Op. 30, and ends with the rarely-performed, 1841 version of Schumann’s Fourth Symphony. The National Concert Hall’s new International Concert Series gets underway with the first Irish appearance by one of America’s most celebrated chamber ensembles, the Emerson String Quartet. Their programme on Sunday night includes Dvorak’s American Quartet and Barber’s Adagio, as well as two of Mozart’s flute quartets and the 1918 Night Piece by New England romantic composer, Arthur Foote. The flautist is the ever-popular James Galway, who will also play Debussy’s Syrinx for solo flute.
