Sunderland's Brewis brothers have been making artful music for well over a decade, and Commontime progresses their cause.
There are so many highlights: the propulsive bass of Don't You Want to Know What's Wrong?, the jamboree joy of But Not For You and the ever-changing tempo of the elaborate Trouble at the Lights.
The Prince-endorsed The Noisy Days are Over is sophisticated, graceful funk, which brings to mind Talking Heads – it builds to a saxophone break that brays as if reacting to the memory of wild youth versus the reality of ageing bones. It's delightful.
How Should I Know if You've Changed? is reminiscent of both Dirty Projectors and Grizzly Bear, with its glorious vocals.
For all the maybe-influences, however, the brothers have created a world of gorgeous melodies and ideas all their own.
