Anyone who has seen Kenny Garrett perform knows what the Detroit-born alto saxophonist’s dance looks like. An intensely focused and energetic soloist, Garret rocks back and forth on his heels like one of those drinking bird toys, lost in the music and building intensity, often with simple repeated figures, until the audience erupts in a moment of euphoric affirmation.
Do Your Dance, perhaps a reference to Cameo's classic Word Up, is Garrett's exhortation to his audience to do its own dance, whatever it is. To help us along, he takes us on a world tour of grooves and rhythms, from Brazil and Africa, from funk and hip-hop. Rapper Mista Enz contributes spoken word on two tracks, and pianist Vernell Brown's Tyner-esque solos match the leader's intensity.
