No, these aren't cast-offs from the band's 1994 Division Bell album but rather some of the musical ideas from those sessions worked on over the past few years. Dave Gilmour and Nick Mason intend this not only to be The Floyd's last-ever album but a tribute to their late keyboardist Richard Wright. It's a curious affair, an 18-track double album full of instrumentals bar the final song (and current single) Louder Than Words. Reminiscent of Ummagumma, it's very much a mood affair and as close to ambient as they'll ever get. At times in danger of drifting off into meaningless spa retreat back- ground music, what brings it all back into shape and focus is the vigour of the playing and just how refreshingly different this sounds to most everything else clogging up the charts these days. One for the headphones. But a rather muted goodbye all the same. pinkfloyd.com
