Pop Corner: One Direction’s ‘Drag Me Down’ is lifting us way up

And BTW, it’s definitely not about Zayn

Track of the week: Drag Me Down by One Direction

Drag Me Down talks a big game. Opening with the lines "I got fire for a heart/ I'm not scared of the dark/ you've never seen it look so easy", it's clear that the first 1D song post-Zayn has something to prove. Luckily, it's damn good. Clocking in at just under 3 minutes 20, it's got a twisty turny guitar line that leads into a powerful chorus, echoing The Police in parts. There's an "oh oh" backing vocal, there's a stadium-ready middle eight, and basically, it's going on repeat chez Pop Corner.

Hero of the week: Niall Horan, for embracing his inner dad. He scolded fans for driving dangerously, tweeting "Guys, I've said it before and I'll say it again Ya can't keep driving this crazy, ya gotta be safe on the roads! Seriously." He went on "this thing of chasing our cars down the freeway, it's not safe, changing lanes in a crazy manner at 65mph is not on."

Zero of the week: People assuming that Drag Me Down is about Zayn Malik. Louis Tomlinson told Capital FM, "are you trying to look for some kind of controversial answer here? You're not getting it! The song is not about that obviously." He went on "We've been working really, really hard on this album and that single in particular so to have the reaction that it's had? We can't complain!" The best bit? Zayn tweeted graciously: "Proud of my boys the new single is sick. Big love. :) x"

Meanwhile, Ellie Goulding has been hard at work in the studio. She posted to Instagram “Making my album has been hard and it has been terrifying for so many reasons. But also a tremendous journey. It is made up of not just some of the most talented people I know but the best people. I am so grateful to have them around me inspiring me and making me laugh like hell at the same time. Soon I will be able to share it with you.”
