A chance to see Richie Hawtin (pictured) in what is, by his standards, a small room is sure to prove irresistable to many techno fans around Belfast. After all, the English-born, Canadian-raised, Berlin-Based DJ and producer has long proven to be an influence and inspiration to thousands of music makers worldwide.
Detroit, the city across the river from where Hawtin grew up in Canada, was the biggest influence on his career, and he found much early success on the back of Detroit techno’s second wave. With releases as Plastikman (one of a myriad of artist names employed over the years) and the Plus 8 label with John Acquaviva, Hawtin’s minimal style gained much traction from the 1990s onwards.
These days Hawtin can still be found at the helm of the Minus label, which has provided a base for acts such as Magda, Marc Houle, Matthew Dear and many others.
