Stars gather for Meteor display tonight

Televised event highlights will be shown for the first time

The Meteor Choice Music Prize event will take place this evening in Vicar Street, with televised highlights for the first time in the competition’s nine-year history.

The contenders this year include My Bloody Valentine and emerging artists Lisa O’Neill and Girls Names.

The event carries a €10,000 cash prize and exposure to movers and shakers in the industry outside Ireland.

RTÉ 2 will air a special one-hour highlights show on March 2nd.

Ireland’s favourite song of 2013 will be decided by public vote, with the winner also announced tonight.

Young Irish fiddle player Daithí, with his song Chameleon Life, and Dublin’s The Original Rudeboys with Never Gonna Walk Away are among the ten artists shortlisted.

The shortlist was compiled from a group of 10 judges and the Irish airplay charts.

Wicklow musician Hozier with his hit Take Me To Church is on the list with Villagers song Nothing Arrived and I am The Cosmos - Look Me In The Eye.

The Strypes with You Can’t Judge a Book by the Cover also made the cut, along with James Vincent McMorrow’s Cavalier, alternative rock band Kodaline’s Brand New Day, Two Door Cinema Club’s Changing of The Seasons and New Jackson’s Sat Around Here Waiting.

Previous winners of the overall award include Delorentos last year; two time winners Jape (2008, 2011); The Divine Comedy in 2006; and Julie Feeney in 2005.
