Moldovan violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja, winner of this year's Gramophone Award for her disc of concertos by Bartók, Eötvös and Ligeti, is the polar opposite of James Ehnes in her new coupling of Stravinsky's Concerto in D and Prokofiev's Second Concerto. She is a gutsy player, whose technique and individuality are never in doubt, but who can seem very insistent about the points she wants to make. Luscious orchestral detailing from Vladimir Jurowski helps, but it can be a bit like going to the cinema or a concert with a friend who frets that you'll miss the special moments, and nudges you all the time to make sure you don't. But the more I listened, the more the approach grew on me. url.ie/8fjv
