Iin 2010, these southern Californians arrived fully formed in the limelight with My Body and Cough Syrup . The tracks pitched Young the Giant as a band with a yen for epic indie rock capable of filling large outdoor spaces. The problem with such ambitious scale is that they may lack the scope to consistently achieve such heights and lengths. Young the Giant's second album is a case study in what happens when your muse needs more than just a penchant for grand gestures. At their best, they rattle the rafters with songs such as It's About Time and Anagram , where fuzzy riffs and melodic hooks provide Sameer Gahia's assured rock voice with room for introspection. But the band seem unsure of this approach and throw a lot of inferior stuff at the wall between the sturdy, robust guitar anthems. A case of some muddled minds. youngthegiant.com
