BELLINI: LA SONNAMBULA
Soloists: Cecilia Bartoli, Juan Diego Florez. Orchestra La Scintilla. Conductor: Allesandro de Marchi Decca 4781084*****

Because of the association of famous sopranos with the role of dreamy Anina (Maria Callas and Joan Sutherland, to mention only two), it is often overlooked that it was created by Giuditta Pasta and was a signature role for Maria Malibran, both famous 19th-century mezzo sopranos. Here, Cecilia Bartoli, in a fabulous pairing with Juan Diego Florez, claims the role back for mezzo sopranos in no uncertain fashion. She sings Anina at period pitch, with a few transpositions, and within this context gives a moving interpretation, coupled with her trademark virtuosity in the dazzling bits. As Elvino, Florez sings in true bel canto style, and the two voices blend beautifully. Despite some mannerisms on the part of Bartoli, this release will be treasured by lovers of Bellini. www.decca.com
