Two short and contrasting readings are on offer this week at the Dublin Writers Museum to enliven the lunchtime. The first is of Mary Lavin's short story, The Widow's Son, a tragedy of rural life with alternative endings.

It is beautifully performed by Nuala Hayes who, through voice and movement, gives to it the depth of the original, filled with those echoes which are the enduring mark of its late author.

Mary Manning, now 92 and living in Boston, wrote the second piece, about a turning point in the life of 17-year old Rose Fitzgerald, future mother of JFK. It lacks the dramatic imagery of its precursor, but Suzanne Geraghty's sprightly performance ensures that it is not lacking in entertainment value.

Both pieces are supported by the talented Emer Mayock playing several instruments in atmospheric support.
