The second in the Focus Theatre's lunchtime season of new one-act plays is Stump, a souffle-light comedy by Liam Brennan which generates a deal of laughter during its 40 minutes.
Charlie is a low-flying entrepeneur, ready and able to make a few quid out of the small ads, used cars, gardening or whatever. He contracts with Mrs Davenport to do her lawns, chop down an unwanted tree, trim another and so on. Nixer, a young man with a love of chainsaws and sharp axes, is duly hired to do the actual work.
Things go hilariously wrong, of course, ultimately redeemed by an imaginative sleight of hand. Dermot Byrne's Charlie is spoofer rather than villain, Eileen Fennell is a quirky old lady and Les Martin gives further evidence of a burgeoning comic talent. Ann Russell directs with the required light touch, with the benefit of a good set design by Robert Lane.
Until August 21st. Booking: 01-6607109/6763071
