FIX new Irish jazz CDs, issued under the aegis of the Improvised Music Company - which was responsible for the first six in the series issued in 1995 - are due for release shortly, writes Ray Corn is key The music covers a variety of jazz and related dialects such as salsa, including a meeting of Irish and Indian idioms, and ranges from straight ahead to more adventurous settings, extending over duo, trio, quintet and larger groups. It also provides tenor saxophonist Richie Buckley with debut album as leader of a quintet on In Arrears, while his equally brilliant brother, tenor Michael Buckley, shows his quality on a trio release, The Pendulum. Guitarists Mike Nielsen and Tommy Hafferty duet on In Two, and bassist Ronan Guilfoyle leads two of the more mouldbreaking groups on Khanda, that fusion of Irish and Indian music with jazz, and Devsirme, which features a front line of Michael Buckley, soprano Brendan Doyle and trombonist Karl Ronan. The sixth, Saoco, is an AfroCuban album led by drummer Conor Guilfoyle.

In a serendipitous link with the IMC's - moving its series of regular jazz gigs from Brogan's, during alterations there, to the Norseman in Temple Bar, several of these new albums will be launched at the new venue: In Arrears on June 16th, In Two on June 23rd, The Pendalum on June 24th and Saoeo on June 29th.
