Marblehead and Sale about half an hour to the north. The first is an old naval port at the end of promontory, with prettied cap'ns houses and wide sea views the second is famous as the scene of the notorious witch trials in 1692 when Puritan hyseria resulted in hangings.
There's more to Salem than the Witch Museum (which children seem to like better than adults). The Peabody is a well stocked maritime museum Hawthorne's original House of the Seven Gables is on the waterfront an there are some interesting old maritime buildings including Custom House
