Cape Cod and the islands can be packed in summer with tourists and well heeled. Bostonians fleeing the city heat, but delightful when the crowds thin out. The Cape has 30 miles of protected seashore with marvellous dunes and tiny, immaculate Province town at its tip. From its south side there are ferries to Martha's Vineyard (good beaches, sailing, spectacular sunsets) and the old whaling island of Nantucket (weathered clapboard houses, whalling lore, cranberry bogs). The easiest way to get around both islands is by bicycle, and there are hundreds for hire.
