The Ulster Orchestra is back at the Proms on Monday, with a programme under Dmitry Sitkovetsky, the last engagement of his term as principal conductor, writes Michael Dervan. The concert, which will be broadcast live on BBC Radio 3 and the Internet, includes Ian Wilson's new Man-o'-war, a 10-minute work commissioned by the BBC. It is, says the Belfast composer, an energetic, driven piece, taking account not only of the conventional warship meaning, but also of the fact that a Portuguese man-of-war is a dangerous sea creature.
Sitkovetsky will also be joined by the viola player Nobuko Imai for a performance of Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante for violin and viola. Details of this and the other Proms are on www.bbc.co.uk/proms; Wilson will give a pre-concert talk at Imperial College, London, at 5.30 p.m.
