Sea Wall

Although it takes just a little more than 30 minutes to perform, Simon Stephens's monologue is fathoms deep. Just like the small but immeasurable discovery the speaker Alex makes when swimming off the coast of France with his father-in-law, discovering a terrifying drop in the ocean floor. "There's a wall in the sea? It drops down. Hundreds of feet . . . I thought it was a gradual slope." Written for Andrew Scott, the Irish actor whose screen career has propelled him stratospheric, and produced by Paines Plough, it is a consummate performance piece, disarmingly personable and suddenly shocking, a play about faith, experience, and the terrifying power of the unknowable.
