The Protestant Reformation took a censorious attitude to devout but "idolatrous" Renaissance depictions of Christian saints in paintings. The Counter-Reformation bounced back with "a far more emotive and dramatic style" of depiction, while remaining true to the accepted documented sources. Cue all manner of heightened characters dramas, with the central figures driven to physical, emotional and spiritual extremes.
