The Irish Jersey-based songwriter behind such classic '70s hit singles as Clair and Nothing Rhymed embarks on a brief tour of the country. The influence of O'Sullivan's morose '70s material on a youthful Morrissey should never be underestimated. Alone Again (Naturally)? Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now? The same song!

Rigoletto
Limetree Theatre. May 30 8pm €30/€27

Lust, injustice and revenge is a brutal business in Verdi’s opera Rigoletto, and director Selina Cartmell has punched up its effect by staging the work in a boxing ring. Opera Theatre Company thus takes a contemporary approach to the sinister underworld of courtly debauchery and tragedy with a new English translation of the libretto by Marina Carr, a writer at home with darkly sexualised fantasies. Now the servant to a lecherous duke, fighting to keep his own daughter from harm, enters his final bout in Limerick. Let’s hope for a knockout.
