Celebrating their 20th year as the band that dares not write a pop song, Glasgow’s Mogwai seem unperturbed by the fact that milkmen cannot whistle one of their tunes. Not to worry – those who groove to mostly divine instrumental music (Post rock? Art rock?) will find much to love here.

Working alone on the deck of a cruise ship, a crotchety travel writer, known as A, is approached by an attractive young woman known as Z. Of course he finds her a complete nuisance, but she is persistent – a buoyant young woman persuading a frigid older male. Michael James Ford’s production recognises a deeper probing in GB Shaw’s comedy, through which the peculiarities of marriage, class and society are measured, from A to Z. Shaw’s marriage was famously unconsummated, and if that seems perverse, here it becomes a sort of chaste utopia: “Nothing ridiculous, nothing uncomfortable, nothing unclean, nothing but pure paradise.” Mmm. What a filthy idea.
