Seven ways to refresh your wardrobe for spring (and bag a bargain)

Fashion: Blazers, wearing blue on blue and denim jackets are all on trend this season

Spring wardrobe: black blazer at All Saints (was €198, now €125); white silk top at Escada (was €349, now €249); red trousers at the Kooples(were €198, now €129) trainers at Kurt Geiger (were €105, now €70)

Refresh your wardrobe with seven seasonless staples, easy pieces for spring dressing.

Blazer trail: A good blazer anchors any outfit and this season there are many on offer that can finish a weekend or workwear look. This one is worn here with go faster striped trousers, but it works just as easily over a summer dress.

Printed blouse (was €375, now €225) and paisley print trousers (were €319, now €191) both at DVF. Earrings at Links of London (were €160, now €110)

Blue on blue: Mix and match separates using a unified shade, which is one way to deal with prints. Take the same shade but in different patterns for separates with a bit of dash rather than clash.

Denim jacket (was €110, now €77), denim shirt (was €80, now €56), jeans (were €100, now €70), all at the Levis store. Paisley print leather handbag at DVF (was €365, now €219), earrings at Links of London (were €160, now €110)

Denim jackets: Never lose their cool – see what Dior did on the catwalk with denim for inspiration. For the new season shrug it over navy or darker-coloured jeans, long skirts or plain black trousers and sweep a chunky scarf over it for cooler evenings.

Long ivory sleeveless jacket (was €895, now €295), ivory sweater (was €395, now €150) both Louise Kennedy. Cream trousers (were €1,150, now €575) at Roberto Cavalli; gold shoes (were €105, now €31) at Dune; earrings (were €190, now €135) at Links of London

Summer whites: Keep the tailoring lightweight in neutral hues of white like ivory or cream and finesse with sleeveless jackets and slouchy trousers but prepare to put up with dry cleaning bills. And remember the powerful effect of female democrats wearing "suffragette" white at the recent state of the union address.

Burgundy wrap dress (was €610, now €366) at DVF; black flat sandals (were €98, now €39) at The White Company; gold hoop earrings (were €160, now €110) at Links of London; small wooden bangle (was €790, now €395); and large wooden bangle (was €890, now €445) both Roberto Cavalli

Linger longer: The longer dress is not just for evening any more – wear it on warm summer days and top with a little sweater to stave off any chillier moments.

Coral leather biker jacket (was €398, now €225) at All Saints; salmon silk shirt (was €220, now €130) at Reiss; white jeans (were €115, now €50) at Jaeger; grey leather bag (was €1,495, now €845), white leather trainers (were €350, now €210) all Anya Hindmarch. Earrings (were €160, now €110) at Links of London

Back to biker: A leather jacket is a buy forever but why not try it in the season's new colour like coral in this case, which Pantone has decreed the colour of 2019. Wear it with neutrals for everyday wear – it's a shade that accentuates other colours like brown, grey, coffee, khaki or beige. If you want to make an impression remember: the leather jacket is being talked about as the new power blazer.

Pale blue knit (was €285, now €135) at Aquascutum; cinnamon trousers (were €310, now €202) at Roberto Cavalli; white pointed stilettos (were €105, now €70) at Kurt Geiger; camel, orange and blue suede bag (was €730, now €438) at DVF

Knit it: One way to master pastel is with a cashmere knit. Great for either summer or winter, pair it with a skirt or with flared trousers or use it with French insouciance, just draped over the shoulders of an outfit.

Trench coat (was €380, now €125) at Jaeger; green cargo pants (were €850, now €425) at Roberto Cavalli; trainers (were €165, now €82) at Dune

A final note: One all-weather reliable is the trench coat and it will always work, worn with anything be it trousers, skirts, dresses or even shorts. It covers a multitude and can be worn with slides, heels or boots.
