When we think of food history in Ireland, there is one word that pops into our minds – potato. An interesting 10-week course in UCC aims to prove that the history of Irish food has far more to offer us than the humble spud.
The course takes a rollicking trip through this area of Irish social history, starting in prehistoric times and finishing with a look at food issues in contemporary Ireland. Along the way, it takes in the arrival of farming; examines the importance of breads, porridge, cheese and milk to medieval Ireland; studies the dietary influence of the Anglo Normans; and explores the Irish traditions of feasting and fasting. The course is delivered by food historian (and author of A Little History of Irish Food) Regina Sexton, and will also include a field trip to Cork's Old English Market. It costs €240 for 10 weeks and takes place each Wednesday from January 21st, 7-9pm. For more information contact the Centre for Adult Continuing Education, UCC on 021-4902301 or see www.ucc.ie/en/ace.
