FOOD FILE:This is Michel Piare at work in Michie Sushi, his restaurant in Ranelagh. Across town in Dún Laoghaire, his brother Michael is manning the kitchen at a new Michie Sushi outlet, which opened this week at 64 Upper George's Street.
When the identical twins say the new business will be "the exact same as Ranelagh, with eat-in, take away and delivery", they really mean it. Telephone orders are being taken on 01-5389990, michiesushi.com
THE FUTURE OF COOK BOOKS
When you're looking for inspiration in the kitchen, do you reach for a cookery book or fire up a laptop? Catherine Fulvio, author of several cookery books, and Jane Travers, writer of Tweet Treats, a book of recipes composed within Twitter's 140 character confines, together with food bloggers Lilly Higgins and Sheila Kiely will debate Cooking in the 21st Century – the Evolution of the Cookbook at an event chaired by Catherine Cleary, during the Dublin Book Festival on Saturday, November 17th. The debate is free to attend and takes place at Smock Alley Theatre at 4.30pm. See dublinbookfestival.com
CALORIES COUNTED
Karen and Frank Daly’s Slender Choice range of Irish-made calorie-counted ready meals is now available in 68 Tesco shops , as well as Superquinn and Dunnes Stores. The range includes cottage pie, beef stew, chicken and leek pie and chicken curry, each with between 260 and 400 calories, and priced from €3.49 to €4.99.
TASTE THE PASTE
One tablespoon of this vanilla bean paste is equivalent to one whole bean. As well as being very convenient, it’s popular with exacting bakers as the paste does not thin batters in the way that extract can. You can buy it from Dunnes and SuperValu (from €7.29).
Nielsen Massey has been making vanilla products in Illinois for more than a century, using beans from Madagascar, Mexico and Tahiti.
WILD AND SLOW
