The largest outdoor replica WWI trench in Britain and Ireland is in Ballyjamesduff, Co Cavan, behind the county museum. Some 6,000 sand bags were used to construct the frontline and support trenches, with sleeping quarters, field kitchen and casualty station, to the specifications used by the Royal Irish Fusiliers at the Battle of the Somme. Tours by Dr Michael Finnegan offer a visceral insight into the experiences of the 210,000 Irish men who served in the Great War. A sobering reminder that many of the 49,000 Irish casualties met their end in a trench identical to this.
