A landmark pub in Phibsborough, mentioned in James Joyce's Ulysses, is set to be partially demolished to make way for an apartment scheme.

Owner Michael Hedigan has been given the all clear to redevelop Hedigan's pub, also known as the Brian Boru, on Prospect Road.

The 19th century pub is reputedly the site where Brian Boru camped before the battle of Clontarf.

Mr Hedigan has been seeking permission to demolish the rear of the pub to make way for a three-block development comprising 66 apartments and an extension to the existing pub.

Permission has been granted with 25 conditions.

In 2005 Dublin City Council refused permission to Mr Hedigan to demolish the pub in its entirety and replace it with a new pub and 57 apartments.

At the time the council ruled that the demolition of the pub, which it said was of "some architectural and streetscape value, as well as literary associations" had not been justified.

The design and bulk of the scheme did not integrate with the surrounding area, the council also said.

Meanwhile, the council has also approved plans for the demolition of The Royal Oak at Finglas Road, next to Glasnevin Cemetery, and to its replacement with a residential development of 86 apartments.
